As a child, I always dreamed of traveling the world. For the past 20 years, I have made that passion a reality and have been traveling and sending clients around the world. Let me use my decades of experience to send you on a truly five-star luxur...

After a tough year in 2019, I treated myself to a solo river cruise for Christmas along the Rhine River and in one word? MAGICAL.

I chose December because I wanted to experience the Rhine during Christmas and visit the famous Christmas markets in France and Germany, and it was probably the best trip I have ever been on.

I kicked off my trip by flying Delta One, lie-down seats to better enjoy the long trip from the United States. I landed in Amsterdam and spent the three nights before my ship departed at the Kimpton DeWitt Hotel, a gorgeous boutique hotel within walking distance of great restaurants, shops, and Dam Square. The streets in that area were decorated so beautifully for Christmas, and it really helped to set the tone for my trip.

The first morning, I enjoyed breakfast in bed followed by a manicure-pedicure appointment within walking distance of the hotel. I took advantage of the hotel’s fitness center and enjoyed an excellent dinner at The White Room, a restaurant recommended by the concierge. The next two days were spent shopping, wandering, and soaking in everything that Amsterdam could offer, including a nighttime canal cruise with lighted decorations along the water.

From the minute I walked onto my AMA Waterways ship until I walked off, it was PERFECT. The ship was decorated for Christmas: there was even a wreath on my cabin door! It was just so festive. I had never been to the Christmas markets before, and every day was a new adventure. European cities decorate so much more than we do in America, and nothing can compete with their Christmas markets. Every day, we were in a different city, exploring a different market. Each market was downright incredible - decorated trees, hot mulled wine (yum!) and snacks abounded. There were rides, shops, and anything else you could possibly imagine.

Although I was traveling solo, I never truly felt alone aboard the ship. I took advantage of AMA’s Sip and Sail Cocktail Hour and mingled amongst my fellow passengers.  I met so many new people that I was never alone for a meal: there was always a group of new friends inviting me along with them. I even passed on the infamous chef’s plate opportunity so that I could enjoy more time with my fellow travelers!

Christmas celebrations aboard the ship were absolutely top-notch. Santa Clause paid us a visit, we sang Christmas carols together, handed out gifts, and enjoyed music. I even got to sit on Santa’s lap!

The staff was hands down phenomenal. “No,” was not a word in their vocabulary and there is nothing they will not do or try to do for you. I was never in need or want of anything. Everyone was professional, sweet, and accommodating.

When we finally departed in Switzerland, I was disappointed that I hadn’t booked any post-nights in the country, but alas, I had to return to my real life; but now packed full of new lifelong memories.
